Mata1

Koen van Cauwenberge, better known as MATA1 or Mata One (Ronse, Belgium), began his graffiti journey at just 13 years old. Working under the motto “Maintain Anarchy Through Art,” he quickly moved from tagging local train yards to creating visually rich murals blending traditional graffiti, stencils and paint-spray techniques. Driven by a desire to spark connection, equality and freedom through his work, MATA1 explores anarchistic whimsy, black humour and sharp irony, layering social commentary onto urban surfaces in Belgium and beyond. From his hometown train-stations to public walls, he remains faithful to graffiti’s raw energy while pushing into new frontiers of style, scale and narrative. Whether mixing bright colour, bold lettering or surreal characters, MATA1 turns the city into a stage where attitude and art collide. Today, MATA1 continues to make his mark: in murals, collaborations and public-art interventions, he transforms walls into voices, reminding us that urban space belongs to creativity, dissent and community.
