Last Kiss

Nafir Nafir

artwork

On a quiet brick wall in Amsterdam, two lovers embrace in a tender kiss. Painted in muted tones with sharp black outlines, their white clothing suggests fragility and purity, while their bare feet root them in the everyday. Yet the image carries a shocking twist: the man wears a noose around his neck, his body suspended as he is being hanged. The woman clings to him, raising her arm upward as if reaching for light, transforming the intimate scene into one of unbearable tension and sorrow.

Created by Iranian artist Nafir, Last Kiss reflects his recurring themes of human connection, longing, and social struggle. Known for his politically charged and poetic stencils, he often confronts viewers with the fragility of life and the cruelty of injustice.

Placed in public space, this mural forces passersby to confront a haunting contradiction—love and death intertwined in a single moment. It is a dramatic reminder of resilience, sacrifice, and the persistence of human intimacy even in the face of violence.

Country of origin: Iran (‫ایران‬‎)

Nafir (Iran) is an anonymous street artist whose raw, expressive stencil work has become a powerful voice in the Middle Eastern urban art scene. Growing up in Tehran, he turned to the streets as a place to speak freely, using walls as a canvas for emotions and stories rarely given space in public life. Working quickly and quietly, often at night, Nafir creates striking faces, fragmented figures and bold visual metaphors that reflect the tension, beauty and contradictions of everyday life under restriction. His pieces appear on crumbling walls, metal shutters and forgotten corners — each one carrying a mix of urgency, vulnerability and defiance. Despite avoiding the spotlight and keeping his identity hidden, Nafir’s work has travelled far beyond Iran, resonating with audiences around the world for its honesty and human depth. Through his stencils, he invites viewers to look closer, feel deeply and remember that even in silence, people find ways to speak.

  • Fixes

In 2018 the artwork was defaced by local muslim youths on the grounds that they have passed their maturity age and public kiss is considered to be erotic and inappropriate: the faces were covered in gold/brown paint.  In 2022, before being evicted from SAMA HQ’s in Immanuel Kanthof 1, we have painted the artwork over in white colour.  In 2024, someone has added letter A in red paint over the white spot where the artwork used to be.
