Safety

Emanuel Alaniz

artwork

SAFETY is a public mural from 2013 in the collection of the Street Art Museum Amsterdam (SAMA), located in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Rather than presenting safety as something enforced by authority or surveillance, the artwork invites viewers to rethink the idea as a shared social responsibility. Placed directly in the public space of a diverse neighbourhood, the mural speaks to everyday life and the people who shape it. The work suggests that real safety is created through: how residents treat one another, how they respond to danger, and how they care for those who are more vulnerable. ALANIZ highlights that risks are always present in daily life, but it is the way people deal with these risks that truly matters. Acts of solidarity, attention, and mutual support become forms of quiet heroism that strengthen a community from within. Safety carries a powerful social message. It proposes that safety is something that can spread—through example, empathy, and collective action. By placing this message on the street, ALANIZ aligns with SAMA’s mission to use street art as a tool for reflection and dialogue, encouraging passers-by to see themselves not just as residents, but as active contributors to a safer and more caring urban environment.

Born: Unknown

Country of origin: United States

Alaniz (1984, Argentina) began painting in Berlin’s abandoned spaces in 2011, turning forgotten corners of the city into striking large-scale murals. A self-taught artist, he swapped a conventional life for the freedom of the streets, using rollers and bold gestures to paint powerful human stories. Alaniz’s work focuses on people living at the margins, blending raw emotion with social commentary. His murals appear across Europe, Latin America, and Asia, each one shaped by local voices and struggles. Known for his nomadic spirit and his belief that art belongs to everyone, Alaniz continues to travel the world, transforming walls into mirrors of shared humanity.
